About Historical Medical Art
Historical Medical Art is the creation of Robert Joseph, DMD, MD. It's sole purpose is to develop pictorial scenes of evolutionary periods of health professions and present those as prints to healthcare professionals for framed display in their offices, clinics, hospitals or homes.
All the specialties of medicine and dentistry will be depicted, with particular attention to historical accuracy.
In addition to the prints, a "legend text" describing the history of the particular period represented, and the significance of the contents of the prints, will appear at the bottom of each print. The "legend text" makes an attractive caption for the art, or, if one chooses, they may be hidden during framing.
Dr. Joseph has always been interested in history, particularly the origins of medicine and dentistry in America. His interest in history and his love of art are the primary motivations behind this endeavor. Throughout his travels, with visits to museums and art galleries, he discovered, like many of his colleagues, the complete lack of art depicting the health professions. Thus, the creation of Historical Medical Art.
After receiving a Bachelors Degree in chemistry from the University of Kentucky, Dr. Joseph attended and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was completed at the University of Cincinnati. He then entered private practice in that specialty in Danville, Kentucky.
Five years later, Dr. Joseph returned to the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and after graduation completed an internship in Internal Medicine.
For the past 25 years, he has practiced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine. With his varied background and love of history and art, Dr. Joseph is uniquely fitted for this endeavor.
Although the historical research and scene development are the efforts of Dr. Joseph, it takes an experienced and talented person to bring the subject matter to life on canvas.
A renowned artist for the past 20 years, Anne Crawford is a serious and passionate painter with particular fascination for the human form. Anne studied art independently for many years, and this, coupled with her early experience as a commercial illustrator, gives her the educational foundation and the natural talent to portray her subjects with both technical and artistic mastery.
Together, Anne Crawford and Dr. Joseph are bringing the past evolutionary developments in medicine and dentistry to life.
They proudly present their prints to those who appreciate fine art and the history of their profession.
